LOCATION  OF THE AREA :

Dhakuakhana (Under Lakhimpur Dist).located at the geographical intersection in between 27.6’o 27.36’north latitude, and 94.24’to 94.42’east longitude .

TOPOGRAPHY:

Slightly down ward from Northeast to Southwest .Under “TARAI” region of Greater Himalaya .

ALTITUDE:

90 meter from  sea level.

DRAINAGE SYSTEM :

 Dhakuakhana is a riverine area . TheBrahmaputra,the Subansiri, the Charikaria ,the Karha ,the Champara are the principal river. The Brahmaputra flows from the Southwest direction . Subansiri is the  tributary of the Brahmaputra . Charikaria flows heart of the town from  Northeast to Southwest direction

Besides these, some other drainage system are also covering  this region . These are known as ‘Beels’and ‘Dalani’. The meandering river some time changes its original stream and creates some ox  bow lake , which are popularly known as ‘Beels’.There are over hundred  beels in this area, which provides fishing facility to the people of this area.

CHARACTERISTICS  OF  RIVER:-

           Mainly brided  meandering.

COIL TYPE:-

             Basically  entire Assam is formed of alluvial soil. These soils are derived from the debris  brought by the Brahmaputra River . Dhakuakhana is a flood plain of river   Brahmaputra . Therefore its soil type is alluvium and sanday loamy .

NATUREL  PLANTS  AND ANIMALS :-

          There is no any remarkable forest in this area. A few mumbers of large trees have been  seen here and  there in this region .On the other hand , as a riverine area some marshy lands trees are found .These are --

1.            Silk Cotton (Bombax malabaricum ) ,popularly  known  as simalu .

 2.           Ajar  (Lagerstroemia  flosreginae )                             

 3.           Sisoo ( Dalbergia  sisoo ) 

  4.          Korai ( Albizzia  procera ) 

 5  .     Chom (Machilus odoratissima ) etc .

       

 This region under the  tropical semi-evergreen forest . Another important  Grasses and Reeds are -

 

1.      Ekara (Walling  Reed )

 

2.      Kher ( Thateing  grass ) 

 

3.       Ullu  ( Saccharum cylindricum )

 

4.       Nal ( Arundo Karka )

5.      Khagari  (saccharum fuscm )

6.      Kahuwa (Saccharum spontaneum )

7.      Arali ( Hemartheria pratesse ) etc .

ANIMALS :-

1.      Large Animals              : Cattle , Horse ,buffalo etc.

2.      Small  Mammals           : Pig ,Goat ,Dog ,Fox etc .

3.       Reptiles                         :  Snakes , tortoise etc .

BIRD SANCTUARY  :

                       ‘BORDOI BAM BEELMUKH’ is the only bird sanctuary of this subdivision .It is also 2nd bird sanctuary of assam . this is situated in just 25 km. from

dhakuakhana .Another proposed Bird sanctuary is ‘KOWABARI  DALANI’ .It is only 2km .North from Dhakuakhana center .

POPULATION STRUCTURE :

Mostly Mongoloid and  are Aryan people are found in this Region . Some  ethnic groups are seen . the present peoples are belongs from – Ahom , chutia , Mishing , Kalita, konch , Brahmin ,Gosain ,Sut , Deori ,Yogi , Nepalee , Bangalee , Nath ,Harizan,Kaibarta etc . Hindu , Muslim , Sikh , Jain , Christian ,etc . are  the religion .Hindu religion is the dominating power of this region .

HOUSE TYPE :

Mainly bamboo hoses are found in the rural areas . R .C .C and Assam Type building also seen in this region . step house (Chang Ghar ) houses are unique style of Mishing people .The main building materials are – Bamboo , Thatching grass ,Ekara , Wood , Cane etc . are use in rural houses . This rural house type is hygienic and part of Assamese culture .

Dhakuakhana is rich in cultural  cottage  Industries of silk .The people of dhakuakhana  wearing silk , cotton garments .women are skilled in weaving of necessary cloths .
