Natural Atmosphere of Dhakuakhana

By – Mr. Ashim Jyoti Ghosh.

The sub-Division of Dhakuakhana is situated in between the mighty river Brahmaputta and its tributary –the Subansiri. Hence, from time immemorial , the enormous amount of water carried by these rivers in summer every year contributes to the creation or molding up of its natural atmosphere, marshes, ponds, forests, quality of earth from place to place etc. The other main rivers and tributaries that flow round the whole year are Kherkata, Charikaria, Karha, Champara, Kumatia, Laipulia, Dangdhara, and the Balahi etc. The rivers Karha , Kumatia and Champara carry almost the half quantity of water of the Jiadhal and flow southward to the Subansiri. The Karha and the Charikaria joins together and wearing a new name Chela flows to the Subansiri. The laipulia and the chichi flowing from deep swampy marsh of Dhemaji District contribute to the creation of the Charikaria by the east of Dhakuakhana. All these tributaries big or small flow to the chela and ultimately get merged in the mighty Brahmaputra. A small spring Jengrari by name flowing from the Subansiri is also there.

The forests of the sub-division are like the forests of the damp Savana area which endow the region with green atmosphere the whole year round. Of course, for the purpose of cultivation and some other reasons the forests areas are being cleared every year and hence, the green forest areas are on way of extinction. Only 15% of the forest area i9s there in the region.

Evergreen trees like Aajar(Lagerstroemia speciosa), Sal (Shorea robusta), Uriam (Bescoffiom jananica) ,Peepul tree etc. mply add to the natural atmosphere. Although big forests are no more to be scen today, some areas of forests are reserved in villages to retain greenness.

Several species of bird’s-big and small can be seen in the area. Swamp partridge , white ballied sea eagals ,snail                            breakers  ,kits crans,moor-hens,water hens.pelicans, king fishers etc.are worth mentioning .The rare species of white ball ied sea eagles are found by the neighbouring forests of Basudev Than
There are five proposed Bird Sanctuaries   in Dhakuakhana sub Division and Bordoloni , Bordoi ,bilmukh, Bor Kalia, Kowabari and Oren chapori. Some parts of Bordoloni and bordoibam Bilmukh belongs to Dhemaji Districts. The Government has already recognized the Bordoibam Bilmukh  biwrd Sanctuary.

There was good number of wild buffaloes in the Sub- Division prior to the Nineties.  After 1980 these rare animals almost extinct some a few at Dakhinbil near Borkalia at Ghilamora  till 1987-88   ,  Rhino(Rhinoceros unicornis) could be seen off and on in some parts. No report of a rhino after 1988 is available. The herds of elephants since a few years back in autumn at Matmora has been almost a regular future every year. Royal Bengal Tigers and such other species of wild – cat families are no where available except the Brahmaputra chapori areas. Some Small herds of deer, antelopes etc. could be found in some place but it is rare today. Among other mammals, dolphins, foxes , otters  porcupines ,monkeys ,wild-cats, fisher cats  are worth mentioning.  T is also reported that some sloth, bears are available by the Southern parts of the region.

Hence it is evident that due to lack of natural abodes are rare species of birds and animals are on way of extinction.  So it is the duty not only of the volunteer organizations, but every one of us to preserve forests and them only in a healthy natural atmosphere animals, birds and man would service
