INFORMATION
Introduction:
Champhai is situated at the border of Myanmar. It is the third
largest in the state covering an area of 3185 Sq Km with population of about
51869 persons. It also plays a significant role in the study of ancient Mizo
history. It is said that in the study of Mizo history, it starts from Champhai
and ends at Chmphai .Since it is situated at the border, trade also flourished
and is one of the most important trade centre in the state. Besides this, it is
one of the largest contributors in Agriculture in the state. It stood at the top
in the production of GRAPE and PASION FRUIT. A more specific study are mentioned
below-

AGRICULTURE
A.
WETLAND
CULTIVATION :
The
people of Champhai mainly depend on wetland cultivation. (Phai Leilet). About 40
% of the total Population are engaged in it ; directly or indirectly i.e.
the land may not belong to them but they cultivate it under the landlord
to which the landlord mainly get 40% of the total harvest. About ¼ of the land
belongs to different landlords which the peasants cultivate
B.
PASSION FRUIT :
Champhai
is the largest producer of Passion Fruit ( Sapthei in local language) in Mizoram
.About 90 % of the total product are contributed by Champhai . About 60 % of the
farmers are engaged in the production of this fruit.
C.
GRAPE :
Champhai
is proud of its grape production throughout the state for it is said that
Champhai grape tastes better than any other region could produce. Even though a
few people are engaged in the production ; almost all the grape products (
mainly Wine-brewed locally ) in the state are contributed by Champhai.
D.
GINGER :
Champhai
also contribute greatly to the ginger production . Many farmers especially those
who get Loans from the State Government use it for their livelihood . But
farmers are faced with the problems of its unstable rates.
TRADE
AND COMMERCE
Since
Champhai is situated at an international Border with Myanmar. Trade flourished
and many people are engaged in
trading with Myanmar. Almost all the Big businessmen of the town
flourished because of the Border Trade. Goods like clothes, silverware,
electronics etc are all imported from Myanmar and distributed throughout the
state through Champhai.
GOVERNMENT
EMPLOYEES
For
there is no Industries setup in this town; people who are not engaged in the
above mentioned are mainly Government Employees .Since it is a District Capital
, there are many government offices viz. Ten ( 10 ) Central based
Govt. Offices and about Forty ( 40 ) State Government Offices. There are
many workers / employee in it.
